Marmashen Monastery

Medieval red-stone monastery by the Akhuryan River, an easy and rewarding excursion from Gyumri

Marmashen Monastery is one of the best short trips from Gyumri, set by the Akhuryan River in the open country north-west of the city. Its warm stone, carved details, and compact group of churches show the Armenian medieval style without the crowds of the more famous monastery circuits.

The setting matters. Come when you have time to walk around the riverbank and see the buildings from a little distance, because Marmashen's strength is the combination of architecture and landscape. It fits naturally with a day spent exploring Shirak's villages and Gyumri's old Kumayri district.
