Valluga

The Valluga is the highest peak in the Arlberg ski area at 2,811 metres, reached by a sequence of three lifts from St. Anton: the Galzigbahn to Galzig, the Vallugabahn to the Vallugagrat, and a final tiny cable car to the summit. It is worth doing on a clear day even if you are not skiing — the summit view across the eastern Alps is one of the best in Austria.

The off-piste descent from the Vallugagrat into the Pazieltal (the "Schindlerkar") is one of the most famous in the Alps — long, steep, and demanding. The piste back to St. Anton is a wide, sweeping red that suits good intermediate skiers.

A story
The summit Valluga lift takes a maximum of four people at a time and you are only allowed up without a guide if you do not have skis with you — the descent from the top is genuinely dangerous, and the lift operators refuse to send unguided skiers up. The view from the small platform takes in three countries (Austria, Switzerland, Germany) and several of the highest peaks of the eastern Alps.
