Rauheneck Castle was built in the 12th century and battered through repeated sieges before its final destruction during the Ottoman campaign of 1529. It was never rebuilt, which is part of the appeal: the ruins feel like a proper hill-castle remnant rather than a polished museum.
The site has been open to the public since 1810 and is easily combined with a walk through the Helenental.
