The Marktplatz is the small triangular square at the heart of the village, lined with pastel-coloured 16th- and 17th-century merchants' houses, the Protestant parish church (with its slim spire and bright white walls) and the Hallstatt Museum. A statue of the Holy Trinity, erected after the plague of 1746, stands at the centre.
The square is the obvious place to sit with a coffee or an Almdudler and watch the village pass by. In summer it is genuinely crowded by mid-morning as tour buses unload at the village edge; arrive before 9am or after 5pm for any sense of the quiet baroque-into-alpine character that the place still has when the day-trippers have gone.
