Kaisertal Valley

The Kaisertal is a narrow gorge valley carved between the Zahmer Kaiser and Wilder Kaiser ridges, accessed from the north side of Kufstein. The walk into the valley begins at the Kaisertal car park (reachable by bus from Kufstein) and follows the Kaiserbach river through increasingly dramatic limestone scenery. The Tischofer Cave is passed on the way in, and the path opens out after about an hour into broader alpine meadows with mountain hut views.

For a full day walk, continue to the Stripsenjochhaus hut (1,580m) for lunch and a view of the Wilder Kaiser faces. The round trip from the valley floor is five to six hours of moderate walking. In spring the valley bottom is carpeted with wild flowers; in autumn the contrast between the orange larches and grey limestone walls is extraordinary.

A story
The Kaisertal was for most of its history inaccessible by road — residents had to carry everything in on foot or by pack animal. A road was only built in 1969, and even today the valley has fewer than fifty permanent inhabitants. The isolation preserved the landscape almost entirely intact, and the Kaisertal was designated an UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Kalkalpen area in 2017.
