Wilder Kaiser Mountains

The Wilder Kaiser range — a jagged wall of limestone peaks rising south of Kufstein — is one of the most dramatic mountain landscapes in Tyrol. The tallest summit, the Ellmauer Halt, reaches 2,344 metres and draws serious climbers, but there are routes for every level. The Kufsteiner Klettersteig (via ferrata) is a popular intermediate challenge with fixed cables and ladders.

In summer, trails run from easy valley walks along the Kaiserbach to demanding ridge traverses with views deep into the Bavarian Alps. In winter, the SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental is one of the largest interconnected ski areas in Austria, with over 280 kilometres of pistes. The trailhead villages of Ellmau and Going are about twenty minutes by car from Kufstein and well connected by bus.

A story
The name Wilder Kaiser — Wild Emperor — is said to derive from a medieval legend in which an emperor and his court were turned to stone for their arrogance, their frozen forms becoming the jagged peaks that dominate the skyline. The neighbouring, gentler range is called the Zahmer Kaiser: the Tame Emperor.
