Tischofer Cave

The Tischofer Cave sits at the entrance to the Kaisertal valley, carved into the limestone cliffs of the Kaisergebirge. The cave mouth is large and dramatic, visible from the path that runs up the Kaisertal from the village of Kaisertal — a walk of about forty minutes from Kufstein along the gorge trail. The interior is not lit for tourism, so a torch is useful if you want to go beyond the daylit entrance hall.

The cave is free to enter and has no opening restrictions. It is often visited as part of a longer walk up the Kaisertal, which leads eventually to the high pastures and mountain huts of the Wilder Kaiser range. The combination of an ice age cave and dramatic limestone gorge scenery makes this one of the better half-day walks from Kufstein.

A story
Tischofer Cave is one of the most archaeologically significant sites in the eastern Alps. Excavations in the nineteenth century uncovered bones and teeth of Ice Age megafauna — woolly rhinoceros, cave lion, cave hyena, and mammoth — alongside evidence of human habitation stretching back over 30,000 years. The fossils are now in the Tyrolean State Museum in Innsbruck.
