Amerlinghaus

Restored Biedermeier house at the heart of Spittelberg, now a cultural centre

Address Stiftgasse 8, Spittelberg

A handsome Biedermeier house arranged around a quiet arcaded courtyard, the Amerlinghaus was the focus of the 1970s campaign that saved Spittelberg from demolition and has served ever since as the quarter's community and cultural centre. It hosts exhibitions, workshops, theatre and neighbourhood events, with a relaxed café-restaurant in the courtyard.

The painter Friedrich von Amerling was born here, hence the name. There is no grand collection to see — the appeal is the building itself and its role as the social heart of the lanes. Step into the courtyard for a coffee and a sense of how the neighbourhood works.
