Vienna's main shopping arteries radiate from the Innere Stadt. The pedestrianised Graben and Kohlmarkt are the elegant heart — Knize, Rozet & Fischmeister, Demel, and the international flagship boutiques cluster here. Kärntnerstrasse, running south from Stephansplatz to the Staatsoper, is the busier mid-range counterpart with department stores and high-street chains.
For everyday shopping the city's main thoroughfare is Mariahilferstrasse (district 7), now largely pedestrianised, full of high-street brands and small designers. The smaller streets in the Spittelberg and Neubau quarters nearby are the place for independent shops and Austrian designer fashion.
For markets, the Naschmarkt (food, with a Saturday flea market) and the Karmelitermarkt (food, less touristy) are both excellent. The famous Christmas markets — Rathausplatz, Karlsplatz, Spittelberg, Schönbrunn — run from mid-November through 23 December.
Antiques and old prints are concentrated in the Dorotheum auction house (one of Europe's largest) and in the streets around the Spittelberg. The Naschmarkt flea market on Saturday mornings is the best place in town for cheap finds.
