Getting Around

Vienna's public transport is excellent and the cheapest way to get around. Wiener Linien runs the U-Bahn (5 lines), an extensive tram network (one of the densest in Europe), buses, and the S-Bahn for the outer suburbs. A single ticket costs 2.40 euros, a 24-hour pass 8 euros, and a 72-hour pass 17.10 euros. The Vienna City Card adds discounts at attractions.

The Innere Stadt is small and almost completely pedestrianised — walking is the right way to see it. Most of the Ringstrasse can be circumnavigated by tram lines 1 and 2 (combined), one of the world's great urban tram rides. The historic No 38 climbs to Grinzing and the Vienna Woods.

Cycling is well catered for: WienMobil Rad bike-share stations are scattered through the city, and the long Danube cycle paths and Donauinsel make for excellent rides. Taxis are metered and reliable but expensive; Uber and Bolt work as alternatives.

Tickets are checked irregularly but rigorously — fare evasion fines are 105 euros on the spot.
