Belvedere Palace

Two baroque palaces (Upper and Lower) connected by a formal French garden that descends in terraces with views across the city. Built between 1714 and 1723 as the summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy, the complex is one of the finest baroque ensembles in Europe.

The Upper Belvedere houses the world's largest collection of Gustav Klimt paintings — including 'The Kiss' and 'Judith I' — along with Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka, and a strong selection of Austrian medieval art. The Lower Belvedere hosts temporary exhibitions. Trams 71 and D both stop at the entrance.

A story
The Upper Belvedere holds Gustav Klimt's 'The Kiss' — the single most popular work of art in Austria. Klimt sold it to the imperial state for 25,000 crowns in 1908; today it draws more visitors than any other painting in the country, and the gallery rotates security guards constantly because the crowd around it never thins.
