The Burgtheater is one of the most important German-language theatres in the world — for two centuries the showcase of the German classical and modern repertoire. The Ringstrasse building from 1888 has a grand neo-Baroque facade and a famous double staircase, originally decorated by Gustav Klimt and his brother Ernst (look up).
Performances are in German. Guided tours of the auditorium and stage run in the afternoon and offer a good way to see the interior without committing to a play.
