Café Landtmann

A grand 1873 coffeehouse next to the Burgtheater on the Ringstrasse, Café Landtmann was a favourite of Freud, Mahler, and most of the city's politicians (whose offices in the Rathaus are five minutes' walk away). The chandeliers, marble, and red velvet seats are exactly what people picture when they say 'Viennese coffeehouse.'

It is bigger and less intimate than Hawelka or Central, but the food is reliable, the cake selection enormous, and you can almost always find a table. Open from 7.30am. Particularly good for breakfast or a long Saturday lunch.
