Located only 12km from Vienna, easily accessible by public transport, Stift Klosterneuburg makes for an excellent destination for a day trip. You might start your day with a tour through the 900-year-old monastery.
The Sacred Tour, offered every full hour from 10am to 5pm takes the visitor on a journey through the medieval part of the monastery, including the gothic cloister and some famous works of art such as the Verdun Altar. This masterpiece by Nicholas of Verdun consists of 51 gold enamel tablets depicting scenes from the bible. Of course the tour also features the abbey church with its magnificent baroque interior and newly restored fresquos.
The Imperial Tour can be done individually from 9am-6pm and features the private appartments of Emperor Charles VI as well as the abbey's museum with an impressive collection of religious art dating from the Middle Ages as well as modern times.
The Wine Cellar Tour, conducted daily at 3pm except during wine harvest in autumns, gives an insight into the modern wine production of Austria's oldest vineyard. The visitors descend into the wine cellars, see the 1000-bucket-barrel and conclude their tour with a wine tasting in the wine shop which offers a broad selection of award-winning wines.
Another way to discover the monastery's art treasures is through a workshop in the newly built studio. Qualified guides and art experts lead special tours through the monastery which conclude with a workshop in the studio where the participants have the chance to try some of the techniques used in the artwork they just saw themselves.
Three excellent restaurants right on site offer traditional Austrian cuisine. The whole complex is wheelchair-accessible. English tours run on weekends and public holidays at 2pm, or by appointment.
