Rathaus

Vienna's city hall is a neo-Gothic showpiece completed in 1883 by Friedrich von Schmidt. The 98-metre central tower is topped by the Rathausmann, an armoured iron figure that has become a symbol of the city. The five inner courtyards host classical concerts in summer.

The square in front, Rathausplatz, is one of Vienna's main event spaces. The Christmas market in November and December fills it with stalls and ice skating; the summer Film Festival projects opera and concerts onto a giant outdoor screen with free admission and a long row of international food stands. Guided tours of the interior on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
