Vienna's main shopping street, universally known as the "Mahü," runs from the Ring out to the Westbahnhof along the border of the 6th and 7th districts. Department stores, high-street chains, electronics shops and flagship stores line a long, broad strip that was remodelled into a shared, largely car-free zone with benches and loungers down the middle.
It is functional rather than charming — this is where Vienna does its everyday shopping — but the pedestrianised central stretch is pleasant to stroll, and the side streets quickly lead to the more characterful boutiques of Neubau and the cafés of Mariahilf. Busiest on Saturdays; closed, like almost everything in Vienna, on Sundays.
