Wien Museum Karlsplatz is the main branch of Vienna's city museum and one of the best places to understand how the capital grew. Its collections move from Roman Vindobona through medieval Vienna, imperial expansion, Red Vienna, and the modern city.
The museum is especially useful early in a visit. After an hour or two here, the Ringstrasse, old suburbs, and layers of imperial and municipal Vienna make more sense when you meet them outside.
