A traditional Viennese Beisl in the heart of Spittelberg, serving classic home cooking — Tafelspitz, schnitzel, goulash — in cosy panelled rooms and, in summer, at tables out among the cobbles. The food is honest and the atmosphere quietly old-fashioned, exactly what the quarter is loved for.
Its claim to fame is a piece of local lore: Emperor Joseph II is said to have been thrown out of the tavern on this site in 1778, after which a wry plaque went up declaring that "it should be possible for anyone to come here." Whether or not it happened, it captures the cheerfully democratic spirit of old Spittelberg.
