Sumakh

A relatively upmarket Azeri restaurant in the Old City, Sumakh aims at a more polished version of the regional cuisine — slightly smaller portions, more careful presentation, an extensive Azeri wine list. The signature dish is the lamb plov served at the table from a copper qazan; the dolma and kutabs are also very good.

The setting in a restored Old City house, with carved wood ceilings and good acoustics, makes it a particularly nice place for a quiet dinner. Mid-range to expensive by Baku standards but the cooking justifies it. Book in advance at weekends.
