A Renaissance and 18th-century chateau set on the right bank of the Meuse 6 km downstream from Dinant, facing the dramatic cliffs known as the Rocks of Freÿr. The castle has been in the same family — the Beaufort-Spontin — for more than 400 years and is still partly inhabited, which gives the guided tour an unusual sense of lived-in continuity.
The real glory is the formal French gardens behind the castle, laid out in 1760 in the style of Le Nôtre and including 33 four-hundred-year-old orange trees that overwinter in a heated orangery. The gardens climb in terraces from the riverbank to a hilltop pavilion. Closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays; tours of the interior run in afternoons only.
