The citadel is the headline sight — take the cable car from beside the church or climb the 408 steps and enjoy the view from a hundred metres above the Meuse. Inside there is an arms museum, a 1914 trench reconstruction, and the views over the valley. The collegiate church directly below is the other landmark, with its peculiar onion-shaped tower that has defined the town's skyline for seven centuries.
Adolphe Sax, inventor of the saxophone, was born in Dinant, and the Maison de Monsieur Sax on his birth street holds a small free museum. The Charles de Gaulle bridge across the Meuse is decorated with brightly painted saxophones — one for each EU member state.
For the surrounding countryside, take a boat trip on the Meuse, a kayak down the Lesse, or visit the show caves on the south edge of town. The villages of Celles and Annevoie, the medieval ruins above Bouvignes, and the Renaissance castle and gardens of Freÿr are all within easy day-trip reach.
