Maison de Monsieur Sax

Birthplace and small museum of saxophone inventor Adolphe Sax

Address Rue Adolphe Sax 37, 5500 Dinant

The birthplace of Antoine-Joseph "Adolphe" Sax (1814-1894), inventor of the saxophone, now a small free museum on the street that bears his name. Displays cover his life and the development of the instrument, with examples of his early prototypes alongside modern saxophones of every size and pitch. The exhibition is small — 30 minutes is plenty — but charmingly done.

Outside, a bronze statue of Sax sitting on a bench invites the inevitable photo, and the surrounding street is dotted with saxophone-shaped public art. The Maison runs an annual jazz festival in summer. Combine with a visit to the Charles de Gaulle Saxophone Bridge a short walk along the quay.
