A picture-book medieval castle clinging to a limestone cliff above a sharp bend in the River Lesse, 8 km south of Dinant. The current building is largely a 19th-century restoration of a much-rebuilt 13th-century fortress that controlled the Lesse valley for the prince-bishops of Liège.
The castle is privately owned and not open to visitors, but it is unbeatable for photographs. The classic view is from the road below or, even better, from a kayak floating down the Lesse from Houyet — a half-day descent that passes directly underneath the cliff. Cycling along the RAVeL network from Anseremme works equally well.
