Grote Markt

Sint-Truiden's central square is one of the largest market squares in Belgium, and it has an unhurried quality that bigger Belgian cities have long since lost. The thirteenth-century belfry tower anchors one corner — not connected to any surviving church, it stands alone as a civic symbol of the town's medieval self-governance. The carillon plays on the hour.

Around the square you will find the neoclassical town hall and a mix of guild houses from various centuries. The weekly Saturday market fills the square with produce stalls. During the Kriekenfestival (cherry festival, held in late June or early July in even-numbered years) the whole square comes alive with music, local food, and celebrations of the Haspengouw fruit harvest.
