Haspengouw Orchards

Sint-Truiden sits in the middle of Belgium's most important fruit-growing area, and in late March and April the landscape transforms into something genuinely spectacular. Cherry, apple, and pear trees blossom in waves across the rolling hills, turning the farmland around the city into a sea of white and pink. Local tourist offices run guided blossom routes during the peak weeks, and cycling through the orchards is one of the best ways to experience them.

Even outside blossom season, the Haspengouw countryside rewards a half-day on a bicycle. The tourist office on the Grote Markt has maps for several well-marked cycling circuits of varying length. Pick up a bag of local apples or a bottle of Haspengouw apple juice at a roadside farm stand — they take their fruit seriously here.
