Sint-Truiden

Limburg fruit-region town with abbey remains, a vast Grote Markt, and spring blossom orchards

Sint-Truiden sits in the heart of Haspengouw, Belgium's fruit-growing region, and in spring the town is surrounded by a sea of cherry and apple blossom. The Grote Markt is one of the largest market squares in Belgium, dominated by the belfry tower, a thirteenth-century abbey gate, and the town hall.

The town has a long history — it grew up around a seventh-century Benedictine abbey, and traces of that past are everywhere. The Sint-Truiden Abbey site now houses a museum and cultural centre, and the Romanesque church tower is one of the oldest in the Low Countries. Sint-Truiden is a pleasant stop on a tour of Limburg province, easily reached from Brussels or Liège.
