Sniper Tower

Gutted ruin of a Yugoslav-era bank, used by snipers in the war and now a giant gallery of street art.

On the west side of town stands the shell of what was meant to be the Ljubljanska Banka — an unfinished concrete tower abandoned when war broke out in 1992. During the siege of Mostar it was seized by Croat forces and used as a sniper position to fire on the Bosniak side of the city, earning its grim nickname.

Three decades later the tower is still a ruin, but it has been adopted by street artists, and the walls and stairwells are covered in murals, stencils, and graffiti from local and international writers. There is no official access and it is technically dangerous — exposed staircases, broken glass, holes in the floors — but plenty of visitors still climb to the upper floors for the view over the river and the abbey. Go with someone, wear sturdy shoes, and accept the risk.
