Mostar makes a natural base for trips around Herzegovina. The most popular is the Blagaj tekke, a Dervish monastery built into the cliff at the source of the Buna River, 12 kilometres south. Pair it with Počitelj, a stepped Ottoman village clinging to a hillside above the Neretva, halfway to the coast.
Further afield, the pilgrimage town of Međugorje is an hour south. The Kravica waterfalls — a 25-metre travertine cascade in a green amphitheatre — are about 40 minutes by car, and one of the best natural sights in the country. Dubrovnik is roughly three hours away by road, making Mostar a viable overnight stop on the Sarajevo–Adriatic route.
