Cathedral of the Birth of Mary

The 19th-century Serbian Orthodox cathedral on the edge of the old town

The seat of the Eparchy of Zahumlje-Herzegovina, a striking 19th-century Serbian Orthodox church on the eastern edge of the Trebinje old town. The two-towered cathedral was completed in 1908 and combines Serbian medieval architectural forms (raised central dome, three-apse east end) with late-Habsburg materials and detailing.

The interior is fully frescoed; the iconostasis is gilded and dark, in the traditional Serbian Orthodox manner. The cathedral is the focal point of the local religious calendar — services on the great Orthodox feast days fill the square outside. Open during services and most daylight hours; modest dress expected.
