Duži Monastery

Smaller, less-visited monastery on the Tvrdoš road

A smaller working monastery, on the same road as Tvrdoš, but with a fraction of the visitors. The community dates from the 16th century; the church was rebuilt in the 19th, and the monastery served as the seat of the Bishop of Zahumlje-Herzegovina during the Ottoman period.

The monks make their own liqueurs and herbal remedies, sold from a small shop in the gatehouse. The interior of the church is small, well-frescoed and pleasantly cool — a good spot for ten minutes' quiet between the more touristed Tvrdoš and the Hercegovačka Gračanica on Crkvina Hill. Free; combine with the other monasteries for a single morning's outing.
