Uhlovitsa Cave

Uhlovitsa is a show cave in the Smilyan area of the Rhodopes, formed in karst limestone and featuring a small river flowing through a series of chambers with modest stalactite formations. It is less dramatic than the Devil's Throat at Trigrad but more intimate — a guide takes small groups through the cave on a lit walkway, and the riverside pools at the entrance allow paddling in clear water.

The cave sits in the Blue Pools nature area (Sinite Virove), where the river forms a series of small turquoise pools visible from the road. The pools themselves are a popular summer destination for Bulgarian visitors, who wade in the cold, clear water on hot days. The cave and pools together make a pleasant half-day excursion from Smolyan.

A story
Uhlovitsa means "fishing hole" — the cave was used for generations by local villagers who knew that freshwater crayfish and trout congregated in the pools at its mouth. The cave was first scientifically explored in the 1950s, when speleologists found an entirely new species of cave beetle that has since been catalogued and named after the cave.
