Coastal Path

The south coast of Čiovo has a rough coastal path that runs between coves and headlands from Okrug Gornji west toward the tip of the island. It is not a maintained trail in any formal sense — more a worn track used by locals and visitors for decades — but it is one of the most rewarding walks on the island, passing hidden coves that are unreachable by road and offering views south toward Šolta and Brač.

The path is best walked in the early morning or late afternoon: the limestone underfoot reflects heat in midsummer and sections of the walk are exposed. Wear decent shoes and bring water. The full walk from Okrug Gornji to the western tip and back takes three to four hours; shorter sections can be walked as out-and-back from any of the access points.

Several of the coves along the way are good for snorkelling — the water is clear and the rocky bottom gives way to meadows of posidonia seagrass. Bring fins if you have them. Duga beach, about halfway along, is one of the quietest on the island and accessible only on foot or by boat.

A story
The path along the south coast was originally used by fishermen to reach coves inaccessible by road. Many of the coves still have no official names and appear on no maps — locals know them by nicknames passed down through families.
