Stari Grad (Old Fortress Town)

Renaissance star-shaped fortress turned leafy park and neighbourhood

The original six-pointed star fortress laid out in 1579 is the heart of Karlovac. The bastions and moats have been converted into green promenades — the Zvijezda (Star) park wraps around the old core and is ideal for a morning walk. The grid of streets inside is regular and quiet, lined with baroque townhouses in various states of upkeep. It is a working neighbourhood, not a museum piece, and is more charming for it.

A story
The star-shaped ground plan was designed by Italian military architect Martino Gambon and laid out using Renaissance mathematical principles in 1579. Walk the full perimeter of the moat-turned-park and you can trace all six points of the star.
