The moats and bastions of the Renaissance fortress have been turned into a continuous green ring that wraps the old town. Walking the full loop takes about half an hour, follows the shape of the six-pointed star, and is the easiest way to grasp the geometry of the place.
Old chestnut and plane trees give heavy summer shade. Cafés along the inside edge spill chairs out onto the gravel paths.
