Makarska's restaurants concentrate along the Riva and the side streets behind Kačić Square. The seafood is the obvious order — grilled white fish (mostly Adriatic sea bream and sea bass), squid, octopus, and the local-style brodet stew. Traditional konobas inland from the seafront serve heavier Dalmatian and Herzegovinian cooking: pašticada (slow-braised beef), peka (meat or octopus baked under an iron bell with embers), and lamb on the spit.
The Riva places work well for sundown drinks and casual meals; for serious cooking head a few streets in. Konoba Kalalarga and Riblji restoran Susvid are long-standing local favourites; Stari Mlin does a good Mediterranean menu in a tucked-away stone room.
