Makarska's old town is small enough to wander in an hour: the baroque main square, the parish church of St Mark, and the Franciscan monastery with its surprising malacological (seashell) museum. The real attractions are outside: the long sequence of pebble beaches in either direction, the Biokovo mountain park looming over the town, and the day trips to Hvar and Brač.
