Crveni Otok — Red Island — is not a single island but two: St. Andrew's Island and Maškin Island, connected by a causeway built in the 1930s. The name comes from the reddish tint of the local stone. The islands lie about 2.5 kilometres from Rovinj's harbour and are reached by regular boat service from the waterfront in summer.
The islands have pine and cypress forest with walking paths, a handful of quiet rocky beaches, and water that is clear and relatively sheltered compared to the open sea facing the old town. A large hotel complex occupies part of St. Andrew's Island, but the beaches and paths are publicly accessible. The boat ride itself gives a different perspective on Rovinj's old town — seeing the church tower and the cluster of buildings from the sea is one of the best views available.
