Golden Cape (Zlatni Rt)

Protected forest park south of town with pine-shaded swimming coves and walking trails

Zlatni Rt — the Golden Cape — is a protected landscape of pine, cypress, holm oak and cedar forest about 15 minutes' walk south of Rovinj's old town. The cape was planted and landscaped in the late 19th century by Baron Georg Hütterott, an Austro-Hungarian industrialist who bought the land and transformed it into an arboretum. Some of the exotic tree species he introduced are still growing.

The forest has several kilometres of walking and cycling tracks threading down to a series of rocky swimming coves. In midsummer, when the beaches near the old town are at capacity, Zlatni Rt offers shade and quieter swimming. The clearest water is on the western and southern sides of the cape. Bring shoes with grip for the rocky shoreline. At sunset, the golden light on the trees and sea is exactly what the name promises.
