Vinkovačke Jeseni

The Vinkovačke Jeseni — Vinkovci Autumn — is the town's defining event and one of the premier folk festivals in southeastern Europe. Held each September, it gathers folk ensembles from across Slavonia, the Baranya, Posavina, and neighbouring countries for five days of music, dance, costume parades, and craft displays in the town centre.

The festival is also a major showcase for Slavonian food. Kulen — the fiery cured sausage made from pork and smoked paprika that is the region's signature product — is everywhere, along with roasted meats, fish from the Sava and Danube, and abundant local wine. The evening concerts run late and the atmosphere in the central streets is genuinely festive. Book accommodation well in advance if you plan to attend.

A story
The festival began in 1966 as a way to preserve Slavonian folk traditions that were disappearing under Yugoslav modernisation. It has grown into one of the largest folk festivals in southeastern Europe, drawing tens of thousands of visitors and dozens of folk ensembles from Croatia and neighbouring countries each September.
