Vinkovci is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe, sitting in the flat Slavonian plains of eastern Croatia. Archaeological finds here go back over 8,000 years, and the Gradski Muzej has an impressive collection spanning from Neolithic pottery to Roman artefacts — including pieces from the Roman city of Cibalae that once stood on this ground. Two Roman emperors, Valentinian I and Valens, were born here.
Today it is a quiet provincial town with a pleasant central square and a handful of churches. Vinkovci is best known within Croatia for its annual Vinkovačke Jeseni autumn festival, celebrating Slavonian folk traditions with music, dancing, and a great deal of kulen — the fiery paprika-spiced sausage that is the region's signature food. The Bosut riverside park offers pleasant evening walks, and the Church of Saints Eusebius and Polion marks the spot where the town's early Christian patrons were martyred under Diocletian.
