Zrinjevac Park

Tree-lined formal park in the centre of the Lower Town's 'Green Horseshoe'

The first of the Lower Town's chain of parks — laid out in the 1870s as part of the Lenuci Horseshoe, a great U-shaped band of green space around the new city — Zrinjevac is the most loved. Plane trees twice as old as the country march down the central avenue, an iron-and-glass music pavilion stands at one end, and an octagonal weather column at the other.

Locals pass through every day; the park hosts the city's main Christmas market and a series of summer concerts. The weather column, erected in 1884 and now a protected historical monument, is the oldest functioning meteorological measurement station of its kind in Croatia; thermometers, barometers, and hygrometers still hang from its sides.
