Eating Out

Czech food is hearty and flavorful, and České Budějovice is also the home of Budvar — known as Budweiser in Europe, but nothing like the American version. Budvar is a dark lager with a malty taste that goes perfectly with the local dishes.

Malý Pivovar is a great beer hall with authentic atmosphere and reasonable prices. Try Czech classics like fried cheese or goulash, plus freshwater fish, duck, and rabbit. There is also a cafe with homemade baked goods. Modrý Dveře is a hip pub with outdoor seating and live jazz on Wednesdays — good borscht and schnitzel. The Grand Hotel Zvon has two restaurants: the upscale Symphony for South Bohemian cuisine and the casual Pilsner Urquell Original Restaurant for beer-friendly fare. For food on the go, the street stands do excellent klobásy (grilled sausage) with mustard and horseradish on brown bread.
