The second largest castle complex in the Czech Republic after Prague, Český Krumlov Castle rises dramatically above the river on a rocky promontory. The complex spans multiple courtyards and centuries of construction, from the Gothic core through Renaissance and Baroque additions. Several separate guided tours cover different parts — plan your visit before you arrive so you don't miss the highlight.
That highlight is the Baroque theatre, one of the best-preserved in Europe. Built in the late 17th century, it retains its original stage machinery, painted scenery, and costumes in near-complete condition. Most Baroque theatres were modernised or destroyed; this one was sealed up and forgotten, which is why it survived. Book the theatre tour well in advance — access is limited to small groups and tickets sell out weeks ahead in summer.
The castle tower is worth the climb for exceptional views over the river loop and the terracotta rooftops of the old town below. The terraced castle gardens above the main complex are a pleasant place to walk and escape the crowds in the lower courtyards.
Admission is charged separately for different tours; the gardens are free. Closed on Mondays.
