The Vltava river almost completely encircles the old town, and the best way to appreciate this geography is from the water. In summer, kayaking and rafting on the river are the most popular activities in Český Krumlov — rental outfits cluster near the river banks and the whole circuit around the old town takes an hour or two at a leisurely pace.
The current is gentle enough for beginners, and the views looking up at the castle and town walls from the water are among the best in town. Longer routes run downstream through the surrounding countryside. Most rental operators also offer inflatable rafts if you prefer something more stable.
Rental is widely available from May through September, usually by the hour or half-day. Operators can shuttle you back to the start if you float further downstream.
