West Bohemian Museum

The West Bohemian Museum (Západočeské muzeum v Plzni) is the main regional history and art museum, housed in a handsome Neo-Renaissance building from 1898 just west of Republic Square. The permanent collection spans archaeology, applied arts, natural history, and one of the best historical firearms collections in the country — over 5,000 weapons from crossbows to 19th-century military rifles, many of them extraordinary examples of the gunsmith's craft.

The decorative arts rooms on the upper floors are worth a visit in their own right: the museum has strong collections of Bohemian glass, porcelain, furniture, and art nouveau objects. Temporary exhibitions are regularly mounted in the ground-floor galleries, often with themes drawn from the region's industrial and cultural history. The building is impressive even from outside — look for the mosaic friezes on the façade. The museum is closed on Mondays. Entry is inexpensive; audio guides are available for the main permanent collection.

A story
The museum's most famous exhibit is its collection of historical firearms — one of the most significant in Central Europe, with over 5,000 pieces spanning five centuries. Plzeň had a tradition of arms manufacture going back to the medieval period; the Škoda Works, which began as a machine tool factory in the 1860s, later became one of the largest armaments producers in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The firearms collection is a reminder that Plzeň's industrial heritage predates the brewery by centuries.
