Budolfi Cathedral is the only medieval stone church in Jutland built in the Romanesque round-arched style that spread north from Germany in the 12th century. Dedicated to Saint Botolph — an English saint popular with merchants and seafarers — it marks the spiritual centre of Aalborg's old town. The current structure dates largely to the 15th century, with the distinctive copper-clad spire added in the 18th.
The interior is whitewashed and relatively unadorned, the light falling clean through simple windows onto stone floors. The carillon plays on the hour; on summer evenings the bells carry across the pedestrian streets of the old town. The cathedral is a few metres from Jens Bang's House and both make a natural pairing.
