Castle Lake and Gardens

Free park encircling Frederiksborg Castle, lovely in all seasons

The moat and lake surrounding Frederiksborg Castle form a serene public park that is free to enter and beautiful in all seasons. A walk around the lake takes about forty minutes and gives views of the castle from every angle. On the south shore, the baroque gardens — with their clipped hedges, fountains, and geometric parterres — are among the best-preserved examples of seventeenth-century garden design in Denmark. In winter, when the lake freezes, locals skate on the ice with the castle as a backdrop.
