Old Town Hall

Silkeborg's Old Town Hall is a modest but attractive brick building from 1857, sitting on Torvet (the main square) in the centre of town. It was built shortly after Silkeborg received market town rights, when the community needed its first proper civic building. Today it houses the local tourist office, making it a natural first stop for visitors.

The building is unassuming — two storeys, red brick, with simple classical detailing — but it represents the moment when Silkeborg transitioned from a mill town into a proper city. The Torvet in front of it is the centre of town life, with a weekly market and the concentration of cafes and shops that you would expect of a Danish town centre.

It is not a destination in itself, but worth noticing as you walk through the centre.
