Summer (June through August) is the main season for Silkeborg. The Hjejlen steamer runs its regular sailings, the AQUA aquarium is at its busiest, and the lakeside and forest paths are in full use for cycling and canoeing. Days are long — the sun sets after 10pm in June — and the outdoor life of the town is at its best.
The Silkeborg International Canoe Marathon in August is one of the largest paddling events in Europe, drawing competitors from across the continent to race on the Gudenå and the lakes. The town fills up; book well ahead.
Spring and autumn are quieter and often pleasant: mild temperatures, fewer visitors, and the forests are particularly attractive in October when the beech trees turn. Winter is grey and cold, and most of the outdoor water activities stop, though the museums remain open and the town centre is functional.
