Laulasmaa is a small coastal village about 40 km west of Tallinn on the northern Estonian coast. Its name comes from the singing sands on its beach — "laulev maa" means "the land that sings" in Estonian.
The village has been a popular holiday spot since the 1930s, and it remains a quiet retreat from the capital. The beach is the main attraction: a long stretch of sand backed by pine forest, uncrowded even in summer. The nearby Lohusalu marina gives access to the coast by boat, and the surprising Arvo Pärt Centre hidden among the pines is a draw for music lovers. Day trips lead inland to Keila-Joa waterfall or south along the rail line to Kloogaranna.
